Stormwater Drains Dudley

Stormwater drains in Dudley take rain from the roof and the yard out to the kerb, and when one chokes the water comes back across the lawn. We jet the line clear, film it to check the pipe, and agree a price with you before starting. Book on (02) 4063 3469 or the form.

What chokes a stormwater line?

Rain lines block for different reasons than sewers, because of what they carry and where they run:

  • Silt and sand washed off the block, settling in any dip along the run
  • Leaf matter from gutters and downpipes, snagging at the first grille or bend
  • Roots finding the joints on the older earthenware house lines
  • Earthenware lengths that have cracked or dropped as the ground moved, which clearing cannot fix

If a line chokes twice in one wet season, suspect the pipe itself and film it before clearing.

How do you know it's the stormwater?

Rain lines and sewers give different clues, so you can tell which one is in trouble:

  • Stormwater trouble shows after rain: water sitting in the yard or the low corner of the block hours after the sky clears
  • Sewer trouble shows in any weather: the toilet and shower gurgling together, or the gully in the yard filling as the laundry drains
  • A gully spilling during a storm on the low ground can be rainwater pushing back through an old combined connection, which some village houses still have

When both sets of signs show at once, footage from inside each line tells them apart. CCTV drain inspection explains how that run works.

How the stormwater job runs

Four steps from call to clear:

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Camera first, jetter through

The camera pinpoints the choke, the jet cuts the silt and roots loose, and a second pass shows the pipe is open and whole.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

The figure on a stormwater clear

What changes it:

  • The distance from the downpipes to the kerb outlet, since a long run takes more jetting time
  • The state of the pipe, because a silt plug only needs jetting while a cracked length needs relining
  • Grates and pits you can get at, since a line buried under a deck or a path takes longer to open

Rain on the Ridge, Water in the Hollow

Everything drains one way

Boundary Street follows the ridge, and the streets below it fall toward Frog Hollow, the flat at the bottom of the old village. A choked line anywhere on that slope sends its water to the lowest yard.

Storms come in heavy

Area rainfall is 1,148mm a year, and east-coast lows can drop hours of it in one storm. Downpipes on the pre-1940 cottages then push that water into lines laid long before storms like these were planned for.

Silt matters as much as roots

Sand and reactive clay wash into grates and settle in every sag, so a line that runs fine in dry weather can still flood a yard in the first big storm. Clearing it in dry weather beats a flooded yard at midnight.

When We're Not the Right Call

If the overflow traces back to the street stormwater or a sewer main outside your fence, Hunter Water or the council handles it. If the line is proven clear and the yard still ponds, the fall of the land is the problem, and a landscaper is the trade for regrading it.

What a customer said

[The team] have done an outstanding job at my mother's rental property. The area they worked on was particularly challenging, as it retained water and had become extremely muddy and boggy… The transformation has been remarkable.

Questions before you ring about stormwater

My yard floods near the low end of the village in heavy rain. Is that a blocked stormwater line?

On the Frog Hollow flat, pooling can be the ground holding water rather than a blocked pipe. If the water lingers after the rain stops, or a gully overflows mid-storm, a choked line is more likely, and filming it settles the question.

Do you clear stormwater lines in Dudley with the same gear as sewers?

Yes. The jetter and the electric eel do the clearing, and the drain camera checks the pipe either side of it. Rain lines carry more silt and leaves than sewers, so the jet goes in first.

Can a stormwater line be relined instead of dug up?

Where the footage shows a cracked or dropped barrel that still holds its shape, relining repairs it from inside without a trench. The footage decides, and the quote covers the repair it supports.

Whose job is it if the flooding comes from the street, not my yard?

A broken water or sewer main out in the street is Hunter Water's to fix. The lines on your block are ours, and filming shows which side the fault is on before any price is set.

Book the stormwater job

Roots in rain lines are covered under tree root removal, and drain jetting explains the high-pressure method. Gutter guards stop leaves reaching the line in the first place.
