What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Not every fault needs a midnight visit, but these do:

  • A burst pipe or a braided hose that has split, dumping water through the house
  • A hot water cylinder that has emptied itself across the floor overnight
  • Sewage coming up through a shower, a floor waste or a yard gully near the back door
  • Any smell of gas, which needs the steps on our gas leak page before anything else

Not sure? Ring and describe it. A short conversation sorts the urgent from the jobs that can wait for morning.

First move: stop the supply

Every minute the water runs adds to the damage, so cutting it off comes first.

  1. 01

Turn the stopcock at the meter or the isolation valve. If that valve has seized, try the one closer to the street.

  2. 02

Switch off power to any circuit the water has reached, at the switchboard if you have to.

  3. 03

Lift rugs, boxes and electrics clear, then call and describe where the water is coming from and how fast.

Meter taps near the coast can seize after years of salt air. If yours will not turn, tell us on the phone and the right tools come in the van.

Why do Dudley pipes split without warning?

Salt thins the old services.

Galvanised and early copper lines feeding the old village houses give way abruptly once coastal air has worked through the pipe walls, and the joint at the meter is a weak spot.

Flexi hoses fray.

Braided connectors corrode in sea air, and once the strands part the hose is holding back mains pressure on its inner tube alone.

Tanks quit in one hit.

Rusted cylinders on exposed blocks fail as a flood rather than a drip, so a cold shower at dawn can come with a wet laundry floor.

Storms finish the list.

When a deep low settles off the coast, a choked gully on the flat can flood a yard at 2am with no pipe split at all.

Storm nights in the old village

The ridge sends it all down

Boundary Street follows the high ground, and runoff from there falls through the village to the Frog Hollow flat. The old combined gullies on that flat were laid long before anyone planned for the downpours an east-coast low brings.

Nothing has to split

Hours of onshore rain can overload those gullies until water lifts over a yard with no broken pipe anywhere. In the dark that looks like a burst, so describe what you see before assuming the worst.

Fine-weather work is the smaller bill

Having a suspect gully cleared on a dry day is routine work at the normal rate. Leave it until the rain is falling and it becomes a night callout.

What an emergency call costs

Four things set an after-hours figure:

  • The night or weekend rate itself, spelled out on the phone before a plumber sets off
  • Where the break is: a pipe inside a wall cavity or under the floorboards means more opening up than one beside the laundry tub
  • The pipe on either side, since a salt-thinned galvanised run can need a longer section renewed
  • Stock on the van, particularly when a cylinder or connector has to be fitted that night

Nothing gets quoted blind. The plumber looks, names the price, and starts once you agree.

The emergency call, step by step

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

The stopgap comes before the cure

Water gets isolated, the failed length or fitting comes out, and a temporary hot water tank goes in if the replacement has to be ordered.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Where the job points next

Some emergencies are the loud end of a problem that has a quieter home on another page:

Hot water gone dead

A cylinder that fails overnight gets made safe here, and the repair-or-replace decision sits on the hot water hub.

Drains and sewers

A sewer that has become urgent gets cleared on the night, and the drains hub covers the camera and jetting work that stops it coming back.

Leaks you cannot see

A wet wall with nothing dripping in sight is a trace job for the leak detection page.

Stormwater

Overflow that only turns up in rain belongs with the stormwater drains work.

When we're not the right call

A leak between the meter and the street main is a Hunter Water pipe, so report it to their faults line rather than paying a plumber to look at it. Power tripping out after a flood needs an electrician to test the wiring before it is switched back on.

What a customer said after a burst pipe

I commend them for their very fast and efficient service when we had a burst pipe.

Questions before you dial

Do you answer on weekends and public holidays?

Yes. We are Available 24/7, public holidays included, and the fixed-quote process is the same whatever the date. Night and holiday work costs more than a weekday visit, and that rate is part of the phone conversation.

Is a burst flexi hose something I can patch myself?

No. Close the meter tap or the isolation valve and leave the hose alone. Salt air eats the braid on those connectors, and swapping one is a short plumbing job, while tape over a frayed braid tends to let go again.

Will the after-hours rate be a surprise?

No. You hear the night rate during the call itself, before a plumber is sent. If the plumber finds more damage once the floor is up, that extra work gets its own figure and waits for your yes.

What if the water is coming from the street, not my yard?

Water escaping between your meter and the street belongs to Hunter Water, and they run a faults line for it. Close your meter, report it to them, and if the leak turns out to be inside your boundary we pick it up.
