Appliances and lines we connect

Each install has two parts, the appliance and the pipe that supplies it:

  • Cooktops, wall ovens and upright stoves, old unit out and new one connected
  • Bayonet points taken out to a deck or courtyard for the BBQ
  • Room heaters and flued wall units, mounted and commissioned
  • Pool heaters, with the supply pipe sized to their larger draw
  • Old appliances capped off and removed once the new one is running

All of the gas side is covered by the one licence, so there is no second trade to book. Leak work and the rest of our gas services are on the gas fitting hub, and hot water units have their own hot water hub.

Can the old line feed the new unit?

We start with the pipe already in place, not the new appliance in its box.

The supply gets traced, tested and sized. A cooktop may run happily off a line that could never feed a pool heater, so the appliance's demand is checked against what the pipe can deliver before a date is set. Where an old pipe has corroded or thinned, renewing it is written into the same quote.

The connection, step by step

  1. 01

    Check the service

The existing line is traced and pressure tested, and the appliance's gas demand is matched against what the run can supply.

  2. 02

    Quote the fixed figure

Connection, any new pipe and the certificate are all in one price, agreed before we start.

  3. 03

    Connect and commission

The appliance is installed, the burners are lit and adjusted, and the whole run is tested with a gas detector.

  4. 04

    Certify and clean up

You get the compliance paperwork, the old unit goes if you want it gone, and the work area is left clean.

How is an appliance install priced?

  • Pipe length, since a cooktop swapped in the same spot needs little new pipe while an outdoor heater across the yard needs a long run
  • The age of the supply, since an old service may need renewing before a new appliance hangs off it
  • Getting the pipe there, since a run under the floor or through a wall takes more time
  • Weekend and night bookings, which are priced at the higher rate, agreed first

Salt air and the fittings outside

Onshore winds reach every fitting on this clifftop

Dudley's seaward side faces the Tasman, and salt in the air corrodes valve stems, pipe clips and bayonets well before their inland equivalents. Siting counts as much as the connection: a BBQ point behind a wall where the block allows, a heater flue turned away from the weather, fittings chosen for coastal air.

Houses, not unit blocks

Census figures give an average household of 2.7 people in mostly detached homes, so the typical install is a wall heater in a weatherboard cottage or a BBQ point on a deck. Many pre-war village houses predate current pipe standards, so we test the existing supply before the new appliance goes on.

When we're not the right call

If you can smell gas at the meter or out towards the street, ring the gas network's emergency line first; leaks inside your boundary are traced under gas leak detection. An appliance with an electric igniter or fan may need a new socket, and an electrician installs that before our gas connection.

Questions before the burner lights

Do you install gas cooktops in older Dudley cottages?

Yes. We check the supply first, since some old miners' cottages still run pipe laid generations ago. If it is sound, the cooktop is connected, tested and certified on the same visit, and any pipe renewal is in the fixed quote.

Can a BBQ point go on a deck near the coast?

Yes, if it is sited with care. Salt-laden wind reaches every exposed fitting on a Dudley block, so the bayonet goes in a sheltered spot where possible, with fittings made for coastal air. A pressure test on the line comes before the bayonet goes on.

Does a pool heater need a bigger gas line than the house has?

Quite possibly. A pool heater burns much more gas than a cooktop or a room heater, so the existing pipe is checked against its demand before anything is ordered. If the pipe is too small, a new branch is part of the quote.

Is the installation certified when you finish?

Yes. Every connection is made under our gas licence, leak-tested and certified before we leave. The paperwork comes with the invoice, and the work carries our 365-day warranty on all work.
